Getting Involved

  • Medical Ministry International (MMI):  A non-profit, international organization "committed to meeting the need for medical care among the world's poor with lasting solutions through excellence in medicine, patient care, and health education".  They are involved in mobilizing volunteers for short-term medical missions and establishing permanent medical centers. 
  • Doctors Without Borders:  An international independent medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural and man-made disasters, and exclusion from health care.
  • Health Volunteers Overseas:  A private, non-profit, non-sectarian voluntary organization that seeks to improve the availability and quality of health care in developing countries by sending professionals overseas to train and educate local health care providers.  They have programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean.
  • Child Family Health International: A non-profit agency that builds and strengthens sustainable healthcare services in underserved communities worldwide.  They offer medical students service-learning opportunities in South America, India and South Africa.
  • International Medical Corps:  A global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.  They offer employment opportunities in Africa, the Middle East and Indonesia.   

International

  • World Health Organization:  The United Nations specialized agency for health.  This site contains information on current health issues worldwide. 
  • International Women's Health Coalition:  Contains a wealth of article related to girls' and women's health and population policies worldwide.
  • Engender Health:  An international nonprofit organization that works to make reproductive health services safe, available, and sustainable for women and men worldwide.  Site contains article on reproductive health issues and other resources.  
  • Family Health International:  A nonprofit international public health organization, managing research and field activities worldwide with a focus on HIV/AIDS and women's and children's health in resource-constrained settings.
  • International Child Health:  A section of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the site contains links to resources and publications related to child health worldwide.  
  • United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees:  Agency mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.  This site provides statistics, news and publications on the refugee experience.
  • Ministries of Health:  A comprehensive list of international organizations and foreign government agencies compiled by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Local (Hamilton)

  • Settlement and Integration Services Organization (SISO): A community based organization which serves immigrant and refugee communities in Hamilton.
  • Urban Core Community Health Centre:  A community based, non-profit organization in Hamilton providing primary health care, education and advocacy, especially for those individuals who face barriers to improving their health and well being.
  • North Hamilton Community Health Centre:  A not-for-profit organization in the North End of Hamilton proving a wide range of health services and programs.  Their special populations are single parent families, immigrants/refugees, seniors, and persons with HIV. 
  • Francophone Community Health Centre:  Provides primary health and social services to the francophone population of Hamilton and Niagara.
  • Immigrant Art and Culture Association: A non-profit organization providing programs and services in Hamilton communities to introduce, promote and preserve the culture and art of immigrants in order to enrich Canadian society.
